POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Youth Development & the YD Camp Director, the Summer camp
Counselor will be responsible for providing an appropriately safe, caring and enriching environment for the children
enrolled in the YMCA Camp program.
Counselors are responsible for conducting themselves in an appropriate manner, setting an example for children, parents and co-workers by reflecting the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

We are determined: above all else, we are on a relentless quest to make our community stronger beginning with you ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Adhere to policies as stated in the YMCA Childcare Policies and Procedures Manual and in subsequent YMCA trainings and meetings as well as follow all state childcare licensing requirements.
• Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
• Must be on time to work, prepared and reliable.
(arrive 10 minutes before shift starts) • Work in a team environment and encourage open communication regarding concerns/issues with children, parents or co-workers.
• Communicate with the Camp Director, Camp Counselors, as needed.
• Initiate and maintain positive relationships with school staff including principal, secretaries, food service staff, and custodial staff.
• Keep a consistent headcount on all children present; communicate changes with all other staff.
• Plan, prepare and lead camp activities (resources provided) • Follow daily camp schedule as prescribed.
• Assist in maintaining clean-up schedules; including janitorial duties necessary to maintain the cleanliness of the school facility and YMCA vehicles.
• Comply with the “checks and balances” system to ensure that clean-up is done EVERYDAY.
• Maintain accurate documentation of attendance, absences and emergency information on each child.
• Comply with all emergency procedures appropriate to the site and in conformity with procedures adopted by emergency service authorities to ensure the safety of the children and staff.
• Maintain all supplies, equipment and materials; inform the Camp Director when new/additional supplies are needed • Ensure that all staff and children are respectful of school property; ensure all school rules are followed.
LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES: • Engaging Community: Builds bridges with others in the community to ensure the Y’s work is community-focused and welcoming of all, providing community benefit • Emotional Maturity: Demonstrates ability to understand and manage emotions effectively in all situations QUALIFICATIONS: HS Diploma or Equivalent required Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting required.
(prefer1 yr) Must complete and pass numerous state required background checks, a TB test, drug test & fingerprinting.
Must be in place prior to working with children.
Supervising youth and presenting positive role modeling through all interactions with program participants.
To meet program goals as outlined in the Childcare Policies and Procedures Manual To keep confidences, loyalties and practice professionalism Be reliable and dependable (arrive 5-10 minutes before shift starts) Must pass CPR/AED/1st Aid certification as required by state regulations from original date of hire and maintain while employed.
Work a flexible schedule to meet program staffing/planning needs.
Exercise mature judgment and sound decision making.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Learn, follow and enforce YMCA guidelines related to internal policies.
Attend all required staff trainings and meetings.
Fulfillment of state-specific & DSS Licensing hiring standards and completion of YMCA program-specific training.
Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
Previous experience with diverse populations.
Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
