BWXT’s Nuclear Operations Group - Lynchburg is currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for its Lynchburg, VA location! The Mechanical Engineer is a part of a team responsible for the design, build, and support of new and existing custom automated manufacturing and inspection systems used in the Lynchburg manufacturing facility.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities: Works cooperatively with teams of engineers (mechanical, electrical and software) and internal customers to design, build, maintain, and upgrade custom automated manufacturing and inspection systems in support of manufacturing, quality control, and other plant operations.
Develops concepts and cost and schedule estimates, and creates proposals and report documents, in support of project initiation, execution and completion.
Performs machine/tool designs and hardware selections including: machine bases, enclosures, part fixturing/handling, precision motion (servo controlled) positioning systems, actuators, sensors, switches, valves, pneumatics, hydraulics, cable management, etc.
Conducts/leads design reviews to gain approval of new system concepts/designs.
Documents designs via build-to-print detailed and assembly drawings, and hydraulic/pneumatic schematics.
Develops purchase requisitions for catalog and fabricated items.
Supports machine shops and maintenance technicians in their fabrication, assembly, installation, trouble-shooting, maintenance, and upgrade of the new and existing systems.
Supports electrical and software team members in the test-and-debug of their applications.
Generates system documentation such as maintenance manuals, set-up procedures, preventive maintenance charts, and spare parts lists.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics.
A minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience.
Must be able to demonstrate effective working knowledge of CAD, preferably in Solid Edge or similar, and/or willingness to work and train to develop these skill sets.
Must be able to demonstrate effective working knowledge of machine and/or tool design and fabrication, or willingness to work and train to develop this knowledge.
Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
Must be highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.
S.
Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.
Preferred Qualifications: A Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology degree is preferred.
Additional knowledge or previous experience in mechanical engineering design and/or with automation/automated equipment/systems is a plus.
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $62,000 and $109,000 per year.
However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations.
Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.

If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
