gov/careers Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties The Lynchburg District Traffic Operations office is seeking a dynamic and innovative Traffic Engineer that would report to the Assistant District Traffic Engineer.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with engineering professionals in various specialty areas of transportation, such as Construction, Land Use, Location and Design, Planning, Maintenance, and the Residency offices.
This position will conduct traffic engineering studies, develop engineering solutions, and address roadway safety & operational issues that impact motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
This work entails conducting on-site field reviews, analyzing observed field conditions and crash statistics, performing operational analyses using various traffic modeling software packages, and providing recommendations for realistic and cost effective solutions.
The position will be expected to provide reports that detail recommendations and include sketches and cost options, as appropriate.
This position will serve as a task leader on diverse teams and will be expected to participate in or lead meetings as needed and provide regular status updates to senior leaders.
This position may review proposed roadway, bridge, and maintenance plans to evaluate the adequacy of traffic engineering components and evaluate land use applications for safety and access components.
The position may also review traffic impact analyses associated with planned VDOT or land use projects to assess their operational impacts.
The position may prepare responses / solutions for safety & operational issues that may arise during construction and may assist with the development of traffic asset projects in the areas of guardrail, signs, pavement marking / marker and signal design; This position may also perform traffic signal timing and phasing adjustments to optimize intersection performance using intersection capacity software and other traffic engineering methods.
This position is eligible for VDOT's Employee Referral Bonus Program.

Minimum Qualifications • Knowledge of federal rules and regulations, including MUTCD, AASHTO, and ITE practices.
• Ability to apply civil and traffic engineering principles and practices to highway design, traffic safety, and operations.
• Ability to collect and analyze traffic related data.
• Ability to conduct traffic engineering studies and developing / applying engineering solutions to complex traffic issues.
• Ability to read and interpret roadway construction / maintenance plans.
• Experience writing and presenting technical reports / solutions to diverse audience / stakeholders.
• Experience in leading / coaching work teams and ability to work cooperatively with both internal and external stakeholders.
• Organizational and time management skills necessary to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Skill in the use of computers and web-based software applications to include Microsoft 365.
• Skill in the use of various traffic engineering software (such as Synchro / SimTraffic, Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Sidra, VISSIM, etc) and CADD design software (such as MicroStation / GuideSIGN / OpenRoads Designer) Additional Considerations • Ability to work under minimum supervision or direction on multiple projects, with varying delivery dates, and for multiple stakeholders.
