The Transit Bus Operator is responsible for transporting people between various places including, on and off campus facilities for schooling, work and across state lines.
They are responsible for driving regular routes and others transport passengers on chartered trips etc.
The Bus Operators are responsible for driving Cars, Trucks, and buses to 60-foot articulated buses (with two connected sections) that can carry more than 100 passengers.
Must Operate vehicles in a safe manner and various conditions.
Transit Bus Operators are responsible for performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections as well as other basic maintenance.
During the summer season Transit Bus Operators will be given the opportunity to work for other departments within the Facilities Management Division, such as; Maintenance, Custodial, Design & Renovations, and the Grounds Department.
This is to provide work during this time of the year where work in the transit department is slow or comes to a halt.
The Bus Operators will be responsible for performing and completing general tasks.
Working independently and exercising good judgement and discretion is essential to this job.
This is a full-time, benefited position.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities 1.
As Essential Personnel, you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents.
Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling, salting, etc.
Transit employees are essential to the overall success of Commencement (May), Orientation and Move-in (August) weekend events and special events that are scheduled in facilities throughout the year, must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.

Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Director of Transit Dept.
3.
Must be familiar with the standard concepts, practices, and procedures of the Transit Department.
4.
Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while completing the job duties and responsibilities of the Transit craft.
Including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toed boots, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
5.
Responsible for wearing a harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts to perform & complete assigned jobs.
6.
Follows established safety driving procedures and techniques to perform and complete assigned bus routes and/or special chartered trips to ensure that they and all passengers are safe.
7.
Responsible for performing basic vehicle maintenance such as checking the bus tires, oil and lights to ensure their vehicle is in good working order, clean and presentable to the public at the start of their shift.
8.
Responsible for picking up and dropping off passengers at designated locations.
9.
Ability to follow a planned route according to a time schedule.
10.
Assists passengers with disabilities to get on and off the bus.
11.
Obeys traffic laws and state and federal transit regulations.
12.
Ability to interact with passengers in a professional, courteous and helpful manner.
13.
Ability to keep passengers informed of possible delays.
14.
Ability & knowledge to answer questions about schedules, routes and transfer points.
15.
Ability to respond calmly and in a timely manner in stressful situations and must be able to continue to calmly operate their bus.
16.
Responsible for reporting accidents or other traffic disruptions to a central dispatcher, and follow directions when using an alternate route.
17.
Responsible for dusting, wiping and polishing windows, doors, handrails and furniture such as desks, bookshelves etc.
18.
Responsible for emptying office trash cans and recycling bins as well as sweeping, vacuuming and mopping floors.
19.
In down periods you will be reassigned to work in other areas such as grounds, maintenance, custodial, and transportation, as determined by the FMD management.
20.
Other duties as assigned.
21.
Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
22.
Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies This position requires a high school diploma or GED.
Minimum 1+years of related experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the Transit bus driving field.
Must have a class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) and complete a training program.
Bus operators must also meet hearing and vision requirements.
All bus operators must have a passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement on their CDL.
Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it.
Employees must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, with strong organizational and computer skills.
Experience in driving buses on fixed routes is preferred.
Individuals in this position must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties of a transit bus operator in typical Virginia climate.
A desire to work with a team to accomplish goals, grow and improve, and understand/follow directions under stressful situations in a calm manner are essential to the job.
Employees must be courteous, detail oriented, self-motivated, diligent, and trustworthy.
Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.
Proof of a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with a Passenger and Air Brake endorsement.
An acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
