Job Purpose
The Special Education Teacher works collaboratively with the Mentor Teacher and Special Education Director in achieving the best possible outcomes for the students served and in creating a culture of excellence at VIA.
He/she contributes to student programming by working in partnership with the Mentor Teacher and Special Education Director for IEP development and implementation, program monitoring, parent and classroom communication, and summarizing student progress for reporting purposes.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Directs Instructional Assistants;
• Effectively write Individualized Educational or Instructional Plans (IEP/IIP);
• Write a progress notes and report cards;
• Ensure effective curriculum implementation;
• Effectively meets the needs of individual students through differentiated instruction;
• Ensure student progress;
• Uses hands-on multi-sensory approaches to teach STARS students;
• Works with Mentor Teacher to assess students for appropriate small groups;
• Implement IEP/ISP/IIP goals;
• Maintain instructional control of classroom/s;
• Demonstrate professionalism at all times;
• Develop lesson plans for students;
• Contribute to a positive work atmosphere;
• Develop and oversee Virginia State Assessments for students (SOL, VAAP, VGLA);
• Oversee special education students, in conjunction with the Mentor Teacher and Special Education Director, to ensure the effectiveness of student programs; and
• Communicate effectively with parents;
• Work directly and effectively with the Chief Operations Officer, Administrative Director, and Special Education Director.
Requirements:
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Education from an accredited college or university;
• Maintains CEUs required for continued licensure;
• Teacher licensure according to the Virginia Department of Education; and
• Demonstrate leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Position Type
This is a full-time position.
The position involves working with students who exhibit challenging and/or aggressive behavior and participation in community outings.
Physical Requirements
The ability to move independently throughout a wide range of environments, some of which may not be wheelchair or otherwise handicapped accessible, is required.
Independent transportation to locations that may not be served by public transportation may be necessary.
