Job Description Summary
The Professional Advisor (PA) position is a full-time, twelve month, staff member who provides academic advising services to all undergraduate resident students.
The PA is assigned students according to major area of study.
This individual works independently and exercises good judgment and discretion while providing academic coaching and service as a staff resource person to other academic departments.
The aim of the PA is to assist Freshmen and Sophomores in the development and implementation of a comprehensive academic plan, which is consistent with their personal, educational, and vocational objectives.
At the same time, assistance as needed is provided to Juniors, Seniors and Graduate students.
The PA reports to the Lead Advisor, and Assistant Directors of Advising and Advocacy, but also to the Senior and Executive Director of Advising Success and the Dean of CASAS when necessary.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
1.
Onboards New Students/Conducts Small Group Advising and One-on-One Advising Sessions (in person): 55%
2.
Contribute toward Increased Retention (by email, phone, or in person): 30%
3.
Support Cooperative Initiatives (mutually assisting other LU Departments to help students): 15%
4.
Perform any other advising/support related duty deemed necessary by the Director of Assistant Director of Advising.
5.
Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
6.
Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's mission.
Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies
Minimum Qualifications:
1.
Four-year college degree
2.
Desire to work with students and help them reach their academic and career goals
Preferred Qualifications:
1.
Bachelor's or master's degree in the field which he/she advises.
2.
1-2 years of vocational or personal experience with the academic area for which he/she will advise.
Effective communication both verbally and in writing.
Ability to intuitively reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
Excellent computer and organizational skills.
Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.
Proof of a valid Virginia driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
Work hours are typically 8am - 4:30pm weekly
