Rockbridge County is seeking qualified candidates for the full-time position of County Attorney, due to retirement of the incumbent.
The County Attorney is appointed by and reports directly to the Board of Supervisors, and serves as legal advisor to the Board, the County Administrator, departments, boards and commissions, and other officials of the County affecting County interests.
The position is also responsible for negotiating and drafting contracts, and drafting memoranda, ordinances, resolutions, regulations, policies, legal opinions, and other legal documents, and defending or initiating court actions in which the County is a party.
The County Attorney attends meetings of the Board of Supervisors and other County boards and commissions when necessary.
The applicant must have extensive knowledge of many areas of local government law, including, but not limited to, parliamentary procedures, economic development, land use, zoning, code enforcement, taxation, environmental, contracts, public procurement, public safety, employment, election law, public records compliance, and real estate.
It is essential that the applicant possess the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas orally and in writing to both professional and lay persons.
The County Attorney must establish and maintain productive working relationships with elected officials, employees, court officials, members of the bar, and the public.
All applicants must show an ability to handle, and/or retain and coordinate specialists for, complex trials and appellate litigation and a demonstrated ability to offer creative solutions in a demanding and rapidly changing work environment.
The successful candidate must hold a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, a license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and be in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in the area of local government law in Virginia, is preferred.
Rockbridge County residency within six months of employment is encouraged.
The anticipated start date is February 1, 2024.
Starting salary is $100,000 and is negotiable depending upon experience and qualifications.
