Preference will be given to candidates who already have a current CDL.
Position will serve as a lead worker on a work crew and perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks to maintain Virginia roadways.
Position will plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish work.
Will determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, ensure crew has proper personal protective equipment and train crew members in proper safety methods.
Will apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc.
, and take corrective action when unsafe conditions are identified.
Will conduct on-the-job training and recommend additional training needs to the Superintendent.
Will assist with recordkeeping and administrative tasks and serve as back-up to AHQ supervision.
Additional positions in the Appomattox Residency may be filled from this applicant pool within 90 days of the closing date.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date.
You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement.
The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
