Description: The Construction Inspector Trainee performs daily assigned inspection tasks in a training capacity preparatory to assuming the duties of an Inspector.
Assignments follow a plan of on-the-job training, the primary purpose of which is to provide experienced inspection personnel for future highway projects.
The work includes measuring, testing, and checking materials, methods, and installations to ensure conformance by the Contractor with the plans, specifications, and the contract.
Supervisory control is intensive initially, but is progressively decreased as knowledge of the work increases.
Requirements: Essential Functions: Inspects excavations, drainage structures, road surfaces and structures to compare the work performed with plans and specifications, conferring frequently with higher level Inspectors or engineering personnel to clarify or interpret details.
Checks elevations against reference points using a hand level or wye level.
Prepares routine reports and records involving the application of basic geometric and trigonometric principles.
Learn use of level and transit survey instruments.
Prepares an "Inspector's Daily Report" which includes the details of the Contractor's work activities and lists the location of work, materials, equipment, and labor forces used.
Becomes familiar with plans, specifications, standards and related material when not occupied with regular assignments or whenever so directed by higher level Inspectors.
Advises Contractor's supervisory personnel of necessary actions to conform to plans and Specifications.
Assist in preparing project records.
Preferred Skills It is preferential for the Construction Inspector Trainee to have the following skills: General knowledge of highway construction General knowledge of computers and software (Word, Excel, Email, SiteManager, etc) General knowledge of construction and technical math and engineering principals Be Self-motivated Be able to able to effectively work and communicate with others Preferred Certifications and Issuing Agency It is preferential (but not required) for the Construction Inspector Trainee to have the following certifications: Soil and Aggregate Compaction VDOT or NICET LEVEL II* Asphalt Field Level I & II VDOT ACI (American Concrete Institute) or WACEL Concreate I (WACEL.
ORG) Pavement Marking VDOT Slurry Surfacing VDOT Surface Treatment VDOT Flagger Certification VDOT Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection Virginia DEQ Nuclear Gauge Safety Training NRC**Recognized Provider Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification*** Virginia DEQ Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control VDOT Approved Provider 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training OSHA GRIT (Guardrail Certification) VDOT Competencies Communication proficiency Ethical Conduct Flexibility Initiative Time Management Work Environment This job is performed in an office environment and or transportation construction job sites.
This role routinely uses field and standard office equipment such as computers, tablets, phones, photocopiers, digital cameras, filing cabinets, nuclear gauges, surveying tools, and other field-testing equipment materials.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb, drive; use hands; and reach with hands and arms.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time seasonal position.
Flexibility to meet client or contractor schedule is important.
Travel Most assignments do not require more than an hour of travel to and from job sites.
However, some assignments will require extensive regional travel each day and others could require staying out of town overnight if distance to job site is greater than 90 miles from home.
