The Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, creative, caring, organized and dedicated part-time Recreation Specialist.
This position will provide assistance to the Community Recreation Programmer at the Miller Center by managing and implementing youth, teen and family programs.
Program areas include but are not limited to: dance, culinary, enrichment, health, wellness, and fitness, therapeutic recreation, specialty enrichment camps, and visual arts such as theater and multimedia.
The desired candidate possesses excellent organizational skills, time management skills, interpersonal skills, and establishes healthy working relationships.

This position is supervised by the Community Recreation Programmer at the Miller Center and is budgeted for 8-15 hours per week September through May.
Summer hours will increase during weeks camp is in session.
Hours vary and include daytime, evening, and some weekend hours depending on program needs.
The general emphasis of the hours will be Wednesday and Thursday evenings and various Friday evenings or weekends.
The Miller Center is the largest center with Lynchburg Parks and Recreation, making it a busy hub for activities and programs.
It houses the administrative offices, Nature Zone, theatre, dance studio and classrooms.
Essential Duties Essential Duties: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Miller Center Community Recreation Programmer; Develops and implements programs focused on the youth, teen and family populations.
Program areas include but are not limited to; dance, culinary, enrichment, health, wellness, and fitness, therapeutic recreation, specialty enrichment camps, and visual arts such as theater and multimedia; Recruits and secures qualified instructors and volunteers to support programs; Recreation specialist is encouraged to teach classes pending their expertise and skill level; Coordinates and completes setup and clean up for activities and programs; Operates specialized computer registration software such as Rec Pro; Handles monetary transactions for registrations and completes budget and expense reports when necessary in a timely manner; Compiles and completes program reports and attendance; Enforces policies and program rules; Supervises participant safety and discipline; resolves conflicts as appropriate; Administers routine First Aid and CPR as needed; Provides exceptional customer service to all internal department and City staff and external customers including instructors: greeting participants, addressing concerns, answering phone calls and emails in a timely fashion, etc.
; Conducts supply inventory as needed and maintains organized storage; Maintains a clean program and work environment by performing general custodial tasks as needed such as sweeping, picking up trash, occasional mopping, wiping tables and high traffic surfaces, cleaning tools, etc.
; Serves in the absence of supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities Successful candidate carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
This position trains new instructors and volunteers to align with the standard procedures as put forth by the organization.
Candidates will supervise volunteers and instructors as needed with planning, assigning, and directing work.
This position is expected to resolve conflict and complaints as appropriate.
Additional Essential Duties at the Miller Center Possess some knowledge of community-based programming and have a strong desire to make a positive impact in the community; Works well within a team to provide the best customer service to community members and program patrons; Maintains a strong work ethic to work individually, meeting all deadlines and assigned work according to deadlines; Researches trends in community recreation as it relates to youth, teen, and family programs; Must have the ability to effectively supervise instructors and volunteers; Have a flexible working schedule, including nights and weekends; Provide support for department special events as position allows that include but are not limited to: event prep, on-site event set-up, on-site event management, etc.
Ability to work in a variety of conditions in the office and outdoors; Attend in-person or virtual meetings as assigned; Must provide own transportation.

; Execute tasks efficiently and accurately, demonstrating the ability to work swiftly and effectively under tight deadlines to meet project timelines and organizational goals; Knowledge or passion for any of the following categories: dance, culinary, enrichment, health, wellness, and fitness, therapeutic recreation, specialty enrichment camps, and visual arts such as theater and multimedia; Requires introductory computer skill, specifically with experience in Microsoft Office software; Ability to communicate well with others and work in a team environment; Must be able to record and report data of center attendance, achievement, and upcoming challenges; Ability to work independently with little or no direct supervision; Flexible work schedule availability to include evenings and some weekends with an emphasis on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Additional Requirements Other Requirements Valid Virginia’s Drivers License and acceptable driving record according to City criteria; CPR/General First-Aid Certification required within 6 months of date of hire; Must have flexible schedule and be available to work evenings and weekends; Must successfully complete required online trainings provided by the City as deemed necessary for the position.
Trainings include, but are not limited to IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training, defensive driving training, etc.
; Obtain satisfactory checks on the following: criminal record, Child Protective Services, Sexual Offense Register, driving record and employment reference checks.
