VES – History Department Chair Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Create and execute a vision for the department, which includes: Implementing a focus for the department each fall and following up throughout the year to see how department members are learning, practicing, and growing within that vision.
Developing, implementing, and assessing department’s curricular needs - such as courses offered, teaching assignments, course recommendations, textbooks, and other resources.
Reviewing and approving all class syllabi and semester exams within the department; ensuring that grading rationales align with school policy.
Reviewing grade books at least twice each semester to ensure grades are being entered in a timely manner and they align with the department’s grading rationales.
Reviewing department member’s goals and meeting with each individually in September to ensure their goal(s) lead to growth within the departments or the school’s year-long teaching and learning focus/theme.
Holding department meetings, mentoring new faculty, checking in regularly with department members, observing each department member teach at least once a semester, and leaving feedback regarding that classroom visit on Folio which should be reflective of the type of feedback given by the Dean of Teaching and Learning and the Dean of Faculty’s office.
Managing department budget.
Engaging in conversations regarding opportunities for growth by holding annual goals meetings and/or meeting with individuals when they are not meeting expectations.
Serve on the Academic Leadership Team to set school academic policies and practices.
Support the Dean of Faculty and Dean of Teaching and Learning in the evaluation process in accordance with academic and department visions.
Work alongside Associate Head of School, Dean of Faculty, and Dean of Teaching and Learning in hiring mission-specific candidates within the department.
Act as a resource for best teaching practices and professional development for those within the department.
Ensure that the department’s classrooms and office spaces are functional, in good repair, and are aesthetically pleasing.
Ability to effectively manage multiple deadlines.
Work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
Education & Experience Required: At least five years of classroom experience teaching History.
A bachelor’s in a related field, which is a requirement for this position.
Masters in a related field is preferred.
Demonstrated experience in curriculum design and departmental collaboration.
Demonstrated experience and strength in teaching analytical and research-based writing.
Excitement to collaborate with grade level teams and the History and English departments.
Demonstrated experience with student-centered educational practices and experience in a variety of teaching methods.
A desire to actively engage in a variety of school needs, including coaching, serving as an advisor to a small group of students, leading afternoon clubs and activities, and assisting in residential life as a dorm parent or member of a duty team.
The ability to enjoy, engage, and inspire adolescents to strive toward their best in the classroom and community as their teacher, advisor, coach, and dorm parent.
Experience in boarding school is preferred, but not required.
Prior experience in coaching is desired.
