The Instructional Designer partners with subject matter experts (SME) to create online course content and learning activities that effectively engage students and promote their success.
The instructional designer is well-versed in pedagogical best practices, including instructional design theory, new and innovative methods, and effective practices, and assists the SME in implementing these in their courses.
The instructional designer must possess the following skills:
Collaboration – the ID can establish and support mutually beneficial relationships with faculty, staff, and other clients; they offer expert advice on course design and pedagogical strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of course materials for supporting student learning;
Design – the ID is able to design engaging and meaningful learning experiences, with strong alignment of course outcomes, activities, and assessment measures;
Expertise – the ID maintains currency with emerging research and tools to promote student learning and engagement; they provide resources and training on best practices for course design, tools, and technology;
Project Management– the ID uses a systematic approach to course development, including a planning map, guides, templates, and outlines, to ensure the timely and effective delivery of course content.
Content writing – the ID fashions suggestions and drives content generation to support an SME in the construction of their course.
Effective instructional designers are problem-solvers who can work independently and manage their time (and clients' time) effectively; they are adept at bringing projects to completion and implementing creative solutions for the good of the team.
While high-level technical expertise is not required, experience with Microsoft products and MAC OS, rapid authoring tools (Camtasia, Canva, Articulate Storyline, etc.
), and learning management systems (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.
) is highly desirable.
Full-time instructional designers work 40 hours/week and receive company benefits.
